Early Life

Aditi Rao Hydari was born in Hyderabad to famed classical singer Ehsaan Hydari and his wife Vidya Rao, who is known for the thumri and Dadra genres of music. Her father, a Bohri Muslim, died in 2013, while her mother, a Hindu by birth, is a practicing Buddhist and a half-Telugu Chitrapur Saraswat from Mangalore. Hydari is a hybrid of Bohri, Chitrapur Saraswat, and Telugu ancestors. When Hydari was two years old, her parents divorced. Her mother relocated from Hyderabad to New Delhi to run the family company. Her father remarried but had no children, while her mother remained childless.

Hydari grew up in two cities: Hyderabad and New Delhi. She began studying Bharatanatyam at the age of six and became a student of renowned dancer Leela Samson. She attended the A Krishnamurthy Foundation India School and graduated from the University of Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College. Hydari bears the surnames of both of her parents. “I had to have both because my mother raised me, but my father is still a part of me,” she said. Since Hydari is such a unique name, I held both Rao and Hydari.

Hydari started her career as a Bharatanatyam dancer, after becoming involved in the art form as a result of her 11-year friendship with Leela Samson. She was a member of Samson’s dance community, Spanda, where she taught students and performed in stage events throughout India and abroad. Hydari finished her first acting film, Sringaram, in early 2004, in which she played the lead role of a devadasi, a 19th-century temple dancer. Sharada Ramanathan directed the Tamil film, which was produced by Padmini Ravi, a well-known Bharatanatyam dancer.

Ramanathan offered Hydari the part after seeing her dance appearance at a meeting, as well as her “vulnerable and fresh face” and similarity to dancer Shobana. After screening at a number of international film festivals in 2005 and 2006, the film was met with critical acclaim in India, where it won several awards, including three National Film Awards. Sringaram had a limited theatrical release in October 2007, but received favorable reviews, with one critic praising Aditi Rao’s “brilliant acting.”

In 2016, Hydari co-starred in Bejoy Nambiar’s crime thriller Wazir alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar. The film follows two unlikely partners, a wheelchair-bound chess grandmaster played by Bachchan and a bereaved ATS officer played by Akhtar. Hydari played Akhtar’s character’s love interest. The film was released on January 8, 2016, to generally favorable reviews and grossed about 620 million (US$8.7 million) at the box office.
